How therapy works

In therapy, my clients build a meaningful, fulfilling life that feels consistent with their personal values. As clients deepen their self-awareness, they become more intentional and self-compassionate in their daily lives. For many clients, this leads to a new sense of freedom and permission to prioritize self-care, which paves the way for a future of psychological health and fulfillment.

My approach

It is important to me that I really get my clients—that I fully understand what it is like to be them, to be inside their head, and to have their thoughts and emotions. I believe this deep level of understanding and appreciation for their experience lays the foundation for true healing. This also allows me to meet my clients where they are in terms of their readiness to change. Thus, if a client is primarily interested in exploring their potential motivation or pros and cons of changing, I am mindful to stay in that place with them, and not to jump to change strategies before they are ready.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness guides how I am in the room with clients—curious, non-judging, and intentional with my words—keeping me attuned and aware of content and process. In our sessions, I encourage clients to slow down, be present with their emotions, and notice their internal experience without judgment. Mindfulness is also an effective strategy for many clients who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or eating disorders, as it allows them to be present with difficult thoughts and urges without acting self-destructively. Thus, mindfulness is one of the competencies I help clients develop as they work on shifting away from unhelpful or compulsive behavior patterns.
